Preparing for Painting
Move furniture away from walls and protect floor and baseboards with 12-inch baseboard masking and paper/poly drop cloth.
Set popped nails or screws , repair cracks and holes and fill dents with lightweight crack filler.
Let the crack filler dry per manufacturer's instructions, then sand the area using a sanding block with 220-grit sandpaper.
treat any areas of mildews with 3-to-1 water/bleach solution. Protect your hands with rubber gloves.
Rinse the entire wall surface with clean, fresh water and let the wall dry overnight. Clean with a TSP solution before you prime and paint.
Spot prime all of the repaired areas with a latex, stain blocking primer. If stains are still bleeding through, use an oil-base primer.
Prime the entire wall with the same stain blocking primer for uniformity.
